Digger, Manyana

An abandoned excavator, left to rust on a beach in Manyana on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. I have photographed this machine over many years as it succumbs to the corrosive sea spray. It is the primary sound source in my electroacoustic work, Digger (2016), and for a sampled instrument, currently under development.

New Sounds From The Grand Amphitheatre

In 2007, I recorded many sounds along the section of the coast between Scarborough and Coledale, NSW. The area is known as the Grand Amphitheatre, and it is the site of a winding road bridge that arcs out across the water. The building of the Seacliff Bridge, as it is known, was necessitated by the instability of the rock face - the old road was often closed by fallen rocks the size of cars. The sounds I captured, of the bridge and surrounds, of the bridge as an instrument, and of instrumentation I brought to the space, became the basis of a collection of electroacoustic works called New Sound in the Grand Amphitheatre.

Hub (2013), 8 channel sound, motion sensors, MAX patch

Hub is an interactive 8 channel sound installation situated in the lane way between the Wollongong Town Hall and the Wollongong Art Gallery. Hub has evolved through various sound states, including music made from soundmarks of the area and synthesis of extinct sounds of the location. The sounds are triggered by motion sensors in the lane way, and the sounds are selected and combined algorithmically, so that the composition should sound unique each time it plays. Hub was commissioned by Wollongong City Council.
